Texas Tech Football: 2024 Season Preview

A New Era Dawns

The Texas Tech Red Raiders are entering a new era under head coach Joey McGuire in 2024. McGuire, who led Baylor to a Big 12 championship in 2021, is tasked with turning around a program that has struggled in recent years. The Red Raiders have not had a winning season since 2015 and have not been to a bowl game since 2017.

Key Additions

McGuire has made several key additions to the roster in an effort to improve the team. He hired offensive coordinator Zach Kittley, who is known for his high-scoring offenses. Kittley was the offensive coordinator at Western Kentucky in 2022, where he helped lead the Hilltoppers to a 9-5 record and a berth in the Boca Raton Bowl. McGuire also hired defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter, who was the head coach at Fresno State from 2012 to 2016. DeRuyter is known for his aggressive defensive schemes.

Schedule

The Red Raiders have a challenging schedule in 2024. They open the season at home against the Ole Miss Rebels. The Rebels are coming off a 10-3 season in 2022 and are ranked No. 12 in the preseason AP Poll. Texas Tech also has road games against the Oklahoma Sooners, the Texas Longhorns, and the TCU Horned Frogs. The Red Raiders close out the season at home against the Baylor Bears.

Expectations

Expectations for the Red Raiders in 2024 are low. The team is picked to finish last in the Big 12 by many preseason publications. However, McGuire is confident that the team can improve on its 5-7 record from 2022. The Red Raiders have a lot of talent on the roster, and McGuire is a proven winner. If the Red Raiders can stay healthy and avoid injuries, they have the potential to surprise some people in 2024.
